  • Ano nuevo

I think it was 2005 when my friend Trevor said to me, “…actually, I have a negative interest in doing a blog.” I started this one that year. What’s the point been? Updates. Saying something once instead of writing different people the same sort of stuff. Writing it so I don’t forget it. Mass appeal. There used to be no place like home video. I’ve recently thought about this. Jeremiah sent me a DVD that had almost an hour of footage from the week before finals in and around his college in Utah. Despite the crass materialism I found it interesting. Other people in the video don’t know where it will go. It answered the “what do people do all day” question. Is she mad at him again? I got off work a little earlier and am at a coffee house. When I first moved to Austin I would go to shops daily, sometimes the same one twice in one day. Now I wonder what all these people are doing. The luxury of time. What are these people wearing? What happened to style? Chain smoking and playing cards for a stretch. Eat an ice cream cone in public, it’s more fun. Mass appeal. The question of an audience comes up. Who listens to the podcast? Being less than mildly interesting to a wide range of people as opposed to… wondering, not profitable, whine while leavin’ it for the next guy. Meditation > audience? I’ve been reading Joe Ely’s recent book, my dad gave it to me for Christmas. It is written in verse form, like song lyrics or something. “Verse” being just four sentences together. Working. I am working now. What part of it do you want?  I don’t know what I expected opening it up. Maybe a story or something written in some order, by a book writer perhaps, not a book by a song writer. It isn’t even a book. What is worth minding? Better to explode than fade out. I forget who said that. The center of detention. “Enjoy the time off.”  What did you mean by that? Overheard. I am exactly where I want to be and this is all working.

    Happy New Year.

  • White Christmas

Flew to Cleveland for four days. Drove to my hometown. Went to the hometown hotel, coffee shop, record store, malls, burger joint, jeweler and home. It snowed. What stood out… the ease of talking to my grandma, cousin, and family friends. Ease of driving in snow. It has seemed like Christmas for a very long time now. I thought of presents for my sister back in October. We got a tree and decorated it weeks ago. We made decorations. We will celebrate in San Antonio in one week and then a couple days after that in Elgin.

Older news. I took three days off work in October to attend the national alliance of media arts and culture conference in Austin. It was stimulating but out of the three people I contacted via email afterwards only one emailed back. At the conference I told so many people I was planning an online database of all licensed low power FM (LPFM) stations in the country that now have to follow through. I recently received an email from the founder of the Prometheus Radio Project and recent FCC hearings have brought interest to my masters work, localism and feedback in LPFM radio.

In November I learned I had to take 7 vacation days before the end of the year. Gracie was starting a new job so decided sooner was better than later to book a last minute flight somewhere. After thinking a lot we decided to fly to visit a friend of hers in Richmond Virginia. We also managed to meet up with my internship supervisor from summer of 1998 and a friend from high school, Damon Green. We went to a coupe different places in DC, Baltimore and to Williamsburg. Excellent.

  • Desk Based Hobbies (Gear)

Sitting at my desk an hour and a half after everyone else has left. Had a guy pull up in a satellite truck to check out some cameras, decks and a switcher. It's fun working with gear. What's the worst is selling someone the wrong gear. What's the best is selling gear that works. I've got a bunch of gear in my trunk that mostly belongs to my roommate Doug. I am taking the MAC laptop out for the first time. We are going over to a friend of mine's place to record him going solo acoustic guitar or perhaps uke. I am sure it will be charming. Did some test recordings last night with Doug doing his own material. We'll record instruments so he can practice vocals. For sure. Still podcasting. Developing the network. Got the myspace page set up for easy listening. Thought I'd get over to Epoch for a second before recording but for some reason I am riding out the spare time right here typing. Typing. Epoch sure has a crappy website. I just checked it out to put a link in here. I don't need more desk based hobbies but that's the way this is turning out. More gear: dad's getting a slide scanner to scan his and his father's slides. Sweet.
